I was a student at Eastern Michigan University and read the book, The Michigan Mirders, in my senior year on the recommendation of a friend. After finishing the book I wanted more information on the police work, politics and the trial. I have been following Gregory A Fournier's progress on the book and was anxiously awaiting its release. I have read the other book on Collins (The Michigan Murders) and really enjoyed it but this book is so much more extensive in detail and research. You actually get to learn about, what happens in the courtroom and the circus atmosphere surrounding it. I HIGHLY recommend anyone who was a fan of The Michigan Murders to read this book. You will be blown away at the exhaustive research that must have gone into the writing of the book.
I haven't read the Michigan Murders so I can't personally compare this book to that, but it's stated in some reviews here that Terror in Ypsilanti doesn't cover much more factual ground than the Michigan Murders. If that's the case, I would recommend reading the Michigan Murders instead because this book is extremely poorly-written. There were numerous passages that I had to re-read due to confusing syntax/flow, and the writing style is quite unengaging. It's a shame because it seems the author did a lot of research but he REALLY could've used more help in assembling it into something smart and thrilling to read. Events are told out of order, people are referred to without any explanation of who they are until a few pages later, and what I was hoping most for-- an in-depth probing of Collins' childhood home and psychological life as an explanation for how he became a women-hating killer-- was missing. Luckily the subject matter was interesting enough to keep a hold on my attention whilst riding the subway, but I'll be honest, the simplistic, monotonous writing drove me nuts.
I was in high school in Wisconsin when these murders occur. I remember clearly hearing about them on the news. Since I am a fan of true crime, I decided I needed to read about the cases. I have now read both this book and The Michigan Murders by Edward Keyes published in 1976. I read TMM first and also reviewed it on Amazon. If you are interested in the story, I highly recommend you read both. My suggestion would be that you read TMM first as I did.I enjoyed TMM very much, but had a couple serious criticisms. Keyes had intentionally changed the names of all the victims and many of the others in the story. For that reason, he didn't include any pictures of the women, or any pictures at all. I insist upon pictures in true crime books, and changing the names, for whatever good reason he thought he had, was ridiculous. However, the writing he did about the murders themselves was far superior to what Fournier covered in Terror in Yysilanti. This part of the story was apparently more important to Mr. Keyes. He went into great detail about the victims, crime scenes, and the investigation. I enjoyed it immensely, and because my copy came without the dust cover, I didn't know the name of the killer until it was revealed in the book. That made for an exciting story.Gregory Fournier published TIY in 2016. He does include a map and photos in his book which I greatly appreciated. He uses real names. Where he doesn't spend nearly as much time on the murders and victims themselves, he spends a great deal of time writing about the legal proceedings and the defendant's subsequent incarceration. It was like reading an entirely different story.I agree with other reviewers that Mr. Fournier is not the best writer in the word. The editing left a lot to be desired. Some sentences were extremely clumsy, wordy, and didn't make sense. Some statements he made about police procedure were not correct. I am including some examples. On page 21, paragraphs 2 and 3 are exact duplicates of each other. On page 23, Mr. Fournier ads to the fallacy that police nationally require 24 - 48 hours before they will take a missing report. This is not true. On page 24, he talks about jurisdictional problems when state police were sent to a call. State police would have jurisdiction anywhere in the state so whatever he meant to say, he didn't say it correctly. There are many more examples in the book.Being in law enforcement much of my life, I was interested in the defendant's write-ups while he was in prison and the amount of contraband he collected. But I think the average reader was probably pretty bored by it.In summary, I liked both books for different reasons. I recommend you read both to get the most complete story.
I have read just about everything that has been written on these hideous Michigan murders. I grew up in Ann Arbor and was 6 when the first murder occurred. Each murder created more fear and anxiety in our neighborhood.Fournier has done an excellent job laying out the entire scenario and murders of each young coed during this time. I learned many facts I had previously been unaware of and got a much more clear understanding of what occurred during that gruesome time period.I think this is a fantastic read and very well done. Interesting and concise while laborious with details and facts.If you know anything about these murders or lived in Ann Arbor or surrounding area you will want to read this book. Kudos Mr. Fournier you have done an excellent job !
I knew who Collins was since I also worked at Motor Wheel in Ypsi. I remember thinking him a strange person. Something about the way he'd look at you. I thought I was well informed about this case, but this book proved me wrong. Well written and I was captivated from the beginning. Highly recommended.
True crime has a way of coming off dry and factual, but I do expect or hope for some semblance of fluid story-telling. It took me a long time to get through this because it was as if I had to just read the case files for myself, and this story is a long one.
Nothing new here. Keyes covered it all. Would have liked to know something recent about the perpetrator. Seems like DNA could prove his guilt in at least 5 other murders.
Gregory Fournier delivers big time. Carefully researched, details never before revealed, the use of real names as opposed to pseudonyms, and bringing the reader current, make 'Terror in Ypsilanti - John Norman Collins Unmasked' a must read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has followed this case over the years, or those new to it. This book is the 'real deal'.
