About the Author
Ravi Zacharias was born in India, immigrating to Canada at age twenty. After earning a Masters of Divinity at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, he began a speaking ministry that has taken him worldwide (including the campuses of Harvard, Princeton, and Oxford University) as a recognized authority on comparative religions, cults, and philosophy. He has been conferred ten honorary doctorates, including a Doctor of Laws and a Doctor of Sacred Theology. His books include the Gold Medallion winner Can Man Live without God, Deliver Us from Evil, Cries of the Heart, Jesus Among Other Gods, and two children's titles. He teaches a weekly, international radio program entitled Let My People Think. Ravi lives with his wife, Margaret, in Atlanta. They have three grown children.

Prayer is a very important part of Buddhist spiritual life.I sense that the author made an effort to be sincere with his portrayal of Jesus this book. He said in the introduction that he was concerned about presenting a biased viewpoint. I also want to thank him for consulting real Buddhist teachers when doing research for this work. However, either Mr. Zacharias simply did not investigate enough or else he allowed his personal bias to distort the statements he got from his Buddhist sources.The Buddhist viewpoint presented in this book is shallow. The views of the Buddha character in the story resemble the theology of a Buddhist follower who has attended a few preliminary lectures but isn’t serious enough about his Buddhist faith to study and understand it seriously.Christians, imagine the reverse situation: a Buddhist author coming to the United States to interview Christians for a book on the Buddhist perspective of Christianity. What kind of book would he write if for his Christian sources, he interviewed the pastor of a fundamentalist congregation in Alabama, the leader of the Christian Science monitor, and an Opus Dei Priest, and then based on that information he tried to piece together an idea of who Jesus is and went back to his native Taiwan to write a book explaining Christianity for Buddhists?Christians, you will not actually learn about Buddhism from reading this book. If you really want to learn who Buddha is, you need to read books from Buddhist authors. You wouldn’t recommend that Buddhists learn about Jesus by reading books by non-Christian authors, so don’t waste your time trying to understand Buddha by reading non-Buddhist books.Also, please understand that just like Christianity, Buddhism is divided into hundreds or even thousands of different denominations. To reject Buddhism as a false ideology after consulting just two or three of them is as ridiculous as it would be to reject Christianity after visiting a Pentecostal revival meeting, a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall, and a Trappist monastery. These various sects came to be for various reasons. Some of them represent different streams of thinking within the Buddha's own teaching. Others represent teachings that emerged as a result of the spiritual understanding of teachers that appeared hundreds of years after the time of the Buddha, but are nevertheless authentic Buddhist teachings. And a some of them are simply mistaken views that emerged as the result of power struggles over the centuries. This may be frustrating to readers who are in a hurry to write Buddhism off as false teaching so they can get back to being confident that their Christian viewpoint is the only correct view. But the fact of the matter is that no ordinary human being will ever have time to look into all the different sects of Buddhism carefully enough to have a real understanding of them, and therefore no one will ever be able to give you a 100% guarantee that the Buddha's teaching is not the truth. When you realize this, you may feel disappointed, but I hope you will come to see that there is a bright side: God never intended for your faith in him to be based on rejecting every other possible religious option. Your faith should be based on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF THE TRUTH. If you have actually experienced what you believe, then no one can ever take that faith away from you. But if your faith is based on a mistaken idea that you somehow have time to refute every other religious viewpoint in the world then you will always be in doubt, unless you are really good at lying to yourself to cover up your doubt.If you are considering this book because you want to have confidence that you chose the right religion, please stop, for your own sake, and take a look at your own heart. What are the foundations of your faith? Do you really need to prove everyone else wrong before you can love Jesus?If you are considering the book because your heart is leading you to learn about Buddhism, please find a book by a real Buddhist author. Since there are so many different denominations, you'll need to spend some time searching to find a presentation and a viewpoint that speaks to your own specific personal spiritual needs. I hesitate to give recommendations because I can not avoid leaving out some great authors if I write a short list. However, because I hope that it will be helpful to some, I recommend the following book:Appreciate Your Life, by Taizan Maezumi RoshiThis is not an overview of buddhism, and Maezumi Roshi is not considered a leading scholar, and he had some scandals in his lifetime. Despite all of that, I for reasons I still do not understand, I personally felt my heart being torn open more deeply with every chapter I read, when I first found this book in 2003. It would be no exaggeration to say that my life was transformed as a direct result of this book. For that reason alone, I recommend it.I had it in mind to recommend a list of books from various other sects of Buddhism, because I personally have chosen to follow another path, different from the one presented in the book I recommend above. However, the other books that I find most helpful and inspiring are not written for beginners and I fear that recommending them here would benefit no one.The personal search for the spiritual truth is fundamentally different from the academic study of comparative religion. You can NEVER reach a personal experience of truth by study and analysis alone. That is not to say that study is not important. It is. But the role of study and analysis is only to remove doubts. It can not take you all the way to the truth. After all the studying and debating and comparing and arguing one might do, in the end, it is the heart that must open to be touched by the spirit of God. Until that experience happens, what we call "faith" is nothing more than arrogance; the feeling that we are more right than our neighbor.
First and foremost, it's a good read. I really got to understand better the difference between Christianity and Buddhism. Because on the surface, their teachings look like they have some things in common, but upon reading the examinations pointed out by Dr. Zacharias, they're really not alike in any way. Very informative. I would have preferred the book use a different approach, though, in presenting how Christ is different from Buddha rather than an imaginary telling of both of them having a conversation in a boat. To a little extent, I kinda' I enjoyed the prologue and epilogue more because it's real. It's right before and after the imaginary conversation.
I like this book because it compares the thinking of Jesus and Guatama Buddha in a dialogue format, as they both share their ideas with young Priya, who was ravaged by a sinful lifestyle that led to her becoming pregnant and contracting HIV. The dialogue takes place on a canal presumably in Bangkok, as a boatman takes the three of them for a ride (and sometimes interjects into the conversation). It's both educational, and entertaining.
I literally read this in less than an hour. I was expecting to learn a little bit more about Buddha, but it was really more of a sermon in a book. Not bad, but not what I wanted. If you're looking to learn about religion I would go for "Jesus Among Other Gods" by Ravi, its very good and a little more substantial.
I really appreciate the overview of other religions and philosophies by people who are truly knowledgeable about the subject matter.
Will have to reread it several times to get the full meaning, Rivi is deep, deep, deep.
Great conversation between Jesus and Buddha. A picture is worth a thousand words. It's almost the same here except instead of a picture, Ravi gave us an insightful conversation well supported by the faiths.
There is no more readable and helpful tool for comparing Buddhism and Christianity. This is the first book I recommend to anyone seeking to wrap their mind around the subject. The whole Great Conversations series is of great worth.
