Four... I feel like I read this type of book before....Jane the governess and Michael the scarred duke and the crazy brother and his wife.. Out to make a crazy so he can replace him..It was okay, boring in some parts.. Typical type of ending..

Very interesting with a lot of scary action. And of course a HEA

Really enjoyed the story. But thought the problematic characters were a bit obvious and the main characters a bit too gullible. A few errors. Like literally 3 or 4 that I picked out. At one point one character was said to be a wife, but then a soon to be wife. And then back as wife. So something screwy happened here.

Jane Harcourt is a beautiful young woman but doesn't see herself as such having been terribly bullied as a child. Raised and educated well in the home of a kindly Viscount where her favored mother a servant was employed she became a governess to the young son of an Earl. She loved the boy but was forced to resign after one too many attempts at sexual assault by the Lord. Yet this is a clean romance. She leaves but told she will have no references which is grossly unfair but not unheard in those times. Fortunately the Duke of Hatfield whose estate was near that of her sister's little cottage where she was staying had great need of a governess for his young son, Samuel. Problem was that nobody wanted the position out of fear of the evil reputation that the 'Duke of Fire' had gotten by being rumored to have killed his wife in a fire. Jane arrived at the great estate of the Duke and though afraid she went for the interview since the pay was three times the norm. She met the boy and they took a liking to each other which the Duke noticed and at the end of the interview he pushed aside his hair covering the side of his face which had been badly scarred in the fire. Jane did not flinch telling the questioning Duke the reason why was because she saw all of his features, strength and grace not just scars. Jane began to educate Samuel who was an avid learner and they quickly bonded. The Duke also was a kind man and handsome as well as well built and he gradually told Jane about the terrible fire and they grew together. His brother and wife were determined to ruin the relationship and convince the Duke that he was not sane. Hence echoes of Bronte. This was a very sweet and lovely Regency romance which could have been enhanced with a little sensuous sex but never mind it was still quite enjoyable. Given to me as an ARC I have voluntarily reviewed.

WOW to say I enjoyed this book is an understatement, I was gripped from the first page. The characters draw you in, I felt everything they were going through even Michaels son a boy who loves his father get much. I don't want to give too.much away, Michael is the Duke, his wife who he loved very much died in a fire, people believed he started, Michael is badly scarred, he managed to save his two year old son. But has been a recluse for six years and Michael is convinced by others around him he is losing his mind. Jane a governess with no references is hired by Michael for his son. THEN THE INTRIGUE AND ADVENTURE BEGINS.BRILLIANT READ BRILLIANT STORY.I voluntarily received ARC copy for an honest review. There were however a few edit problems, which I have been told will be corrected. BUT DON'T LET THAT PUT YOU OFF A GOOD 👍 STORY. IT DIDN'T ME.

After fending off lewd advances from her employer, Jane Harcourt leavers her post as a governess without a reference and finds herself desperate for a new position. Michael Blackstone, the Duke of Hayfield, needs a governess for his son, but with rumors abounding that he's responsible for his wife's death, few want to work for him, especially since he is also badly scarred and appears to be going mad. With no other opportunities available to her, Jane accepts the position and soon finds that the duke is not what she'd imagined and the two begin to grow ever closer. However, there are sinister individuals manipulating them and working to poison them against each other and their machinations may be too much for the couple to overcome. This book had some awkward wording that had me rereading (although I did read an unedited advance copy, so most of that will probably be better in the final) and some of the heroine's inner monologue was a bit too sweet and unbelievable for me. There were several misused words that also led to some confusion and rereading. Jane disappointed me with how quick she was to judge the duke based on gossip before she'd even met him and this seemed wholly at odds with the sweet girl her inner monologue had set her up to be. In fact, I found her to be rather a hypocrite at first, vowing not to listen to or spread gossip and then regularly referring to the duke as a murderer, despite the fact that the only evidence of this came from gossip. Despite this, she improved as she opened her mind and this eagerness in her to be this sweet person became key to the plot later on. We have some very well-drawn villains here that made the whole thing delightfully dark and made up for the fact that this is a clean read (normally a dealbreaker for me). Once I got into the story, I didn't want to put it down.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Hidden Gem ReviewI love Regency love stories, cut my reading for pleasure teeth on Georgette Heyer back in the 60's and moved on from there. So I guess I can say I've seen a lot of renditions in this genre. In this one I feel the author tried too hard.Ms. Monroe's story telling voice was too detached, missing the mark in expressing the inner feelings of the characters. Her prose overly flowery. There were at times an editing issue, while nothing grievous it did distract from what was for the most part a well written story. The story itself was interesting and I feel with a little more study of the time era it could have been great.A chosen read and volunteered review.
