About the Author
Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She later lived in Paris for fifteen years, where she married, completed her undergraduate degree in Literature at the Sorbonne, and a graduate degree in Psychology at the Institut Catholique. She moved to the U.S. in 1981 and earned an MFA in Writing at Columbia. She currently teaches at Princeton University. Becoming Jane Eyre is her 10th book. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, O Magazine and included in the Best American Short Stories. She has twice won an O’Henry Prize, as well as an Open Fiction Award, a Willa Cather Prize, and a Smart Family Foundation Prize. Her novel Cracks was nominated for an Impac Award, and has been made into a feature film to be distributed by IFC. She has been published in 8 countries.

What a peculiar little book this is! It's written in third person narrative but told from the point of view of one single character. Usually, such writing lends the book an ominous tone, and indeed it did here. The Bay of Foxes is the story of Dawit, an Ethiopian escaped prisoner in Paris, who is befriended by the famous and aging female author known only as M.M. gives Dawit a place to stay and bestows money and clothing upon him in exchange for intimacy. Wanting to earn his way for a monthly stipend, he soon becomes her personal secretary and even helps edit her books. However, when Dawit takes a male lover, M. becomes jealous and things spiral out of control.The reader really gets to know Dawit as his past is revealed, his parent's history, his imprisonment and such. But M. remains at a distance (possibly on purpose?) as the few details we learn about her come only from Dawit or other minor characters that are close business acquaintances of hers (Her publisher tells Dawit he is not the first!).The oddity to the story is that Dawit frequently contemplates a short novel that M. is writing about their relationship. He says it's not very good, lacks dialogue, or does not have enough conflict. In turn, it's exactly like this book you are reading which leads you to wonder if you are supposed to be reading M.'s story (the truth is somewhat revealed in the end).Those who are fans of Patricia Highsmith will immediately think of The Talented Mr. Ripley as I did, which makes this a fun psychological story, but also a very predictable one! Eventually, I was surprised to even see Highsmith mentioned in the storyline in a scene where Dawit's lover is reading a Highsmith book! A little homage to the inspiration for this book, perhaps?Either way, it's a short character piece that lacked a lot of the intensity that Highsmith was so good at, but I still found The Bay of Foxes to be quite an enjoyable read.
What an interesting story this was. The topic is quite unusual but presented in a great fashion, showing a snippet of life from an artificially famous person "M" Just using the initial was intriguing. Although hard to read about prisons and torture, it was a necessary part of the story to illustrate some of the history of Ethiopia. I also found interested the visit to Sardinia. What do I think of the main character? A product of his life history.

This book showed such potential at the start and as one friend said - went downskill like a ski slope.Poor character development,silly plot.
Does no one remember "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone"? Besides the obvious idea ripoff, this book was deadly dull, predictable, and after struggling through the pages, fizzles at the end. Fizzles in that you read the last words and turn the page expecting more. This book is a pointless waste of time.
It is 1978 and Dawit is in Paris. But this is no fairy tale. Dawit is an illegal immigrant from Ethiopia where he grew up rich and secure due to his father's high position in the government. That all changed when the rebels came. Dawit went from riches to absolute poverty as his family exploded. His father dead, Dawit and his mother sent to the prisons where few ever emerge. After weeks or months of torture, Dawit manages to escape and eventually makes his way to Paris.In Paris, he wanders the streets penniless during the days. At night, he can sleep in an apartment crammed full of other Ethiopian immigrants and grab a few bites. One day Dawit manages to make a bit of money working for cash and wanders into a cafe where he can order a coffee and sit at peace for a while in the kind of surroundings he used to take for granted. Also there, Dawit recognizes the famous woman author, M. For some reason, when M. sees him looking at her, she beckons him over. Soon they are talking, and M. seems impressed by his beauty and obvious education. The encounter ends with her asking Dawit to come to her apartment in a few days time.When he goes, M. quizzes him more about his former life. She ends up offering him shelter in her apartment. Dawit's life undergoes a dramatic change. Now he acts as her secretary, arranging her life and serving as her editor. M gives hm money and buys him beautiful clothes. Dawit knows this is due to his youth and beauty, but makes an uneasy bargain.As summer approaches, M tells Dawit they will be going to her summer home, a villa on the island of Sardinia. Things start to fall apart. M is becoming impatient that Dawit will not give her the physical love she craves. Things escalate when Dawit falls in love with another and M starts to realise it. How far will M go to get the payback she believes is her due? What will Dawit do to maintain his precarious climb out of poverty and obscurity?Sheila Kohler has written a beautiful, chilling spellbinder. The writing is languorous, echoing the hot country of Dawit's birth and the island luxury he finds himself in. The question of motives, of what we owe those who help us, of reciprocation of desires, is hauntingly raised. This book is recommended for readers of general and literary fiction.
