Great book about a great photographer
This biography, shockingly the first-ever of master photographic innovator and artist Carleton Watkins, offers up a multilayered recounting of the history of the development of the Western USA. Green has written a biography that places Watkins within many historically-defining realities: the establishment of the national park system, the Gold Rush, the birth of new technologies, and the use of the still very much new medium of photography to reveal the majesty of the West to the Eastern establishment and Europe. Green uncovers many fascinating (and utterly surprising) details in the Watkins story that makes this a page turner armchair historians and art history lovers alike will find hard to put down.
How had I never heard of Carleton Watkins? I've read about his contemporary Eadweard Muybridge. What a story!Watkins' mammoth plate photographs of Yosemite and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias was what prompted Abraham Lincoln to place Yosemite in the public trust. This was one of the best books on American history I have read all year. The pictures inside are wonderful and the book cover unfolds into a poster of El Capitan. This was a fun surprise.
