Fr D was my spiritual director during my Diaconate Formation, his wisdom still guides me, I gave his book to my RCIA candidate, I hope the book will guide and challenge him too!
This was a very basic book with simple questions and answers on Catholicism. It was perfect for what I needed it for.
Barr and Phillips, two other reviewers, are both correct in the assessment that the book is a bit soft. For those who are struggling this is a nice feather bed; however, for those who are strongly convinced about the teachings of the Church will find the responses lack the "justness" of God.The book is theologically correct, but one should note that most priests in fact are overworked and tend to support the active faithful flock in front of them, not the half hearted non attending luke warm Catholic who shows up for sacramental activities (infant baptism, marriage, etc) and fades away quickly once done.Thus the section on Marriage is correct and orthodox, and some priests may provide great comfort and be "flexible" as cannon law allows. In reality, in most of the parishes I have been in, the priests are hardly able to accommodate the needs of the faithful weekly attendees, let alone the half hearted so the bulletins will have statements that say, things like sacramental marriages in the church are preformed for those who are active practicing Catholics, and have to be arranged one year in advance of the date of marriage. Most of the answers are like these, and practice doesn't always marry up to teachings, and the author points this out very pleasantly.Overall the book is a gentle read, very well written. Excellent gift for a new Catholic, or someone you know in an RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) class, who is preparing for baptism, confirmation or who is returning to the Church after a long absence.
This is a great resource in any Catholic's home. Fr. Dietzen's compilation of questions and answers go across the board. The book addresses issues of marriage and divorce, abortion, extra-terrestial life, sexual orientation and of course, celibacy. Actually, that's just a sampling of the many topics covered in this book. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Catholic with hundreds of years of ancestors behind me but questions still pop in my mind. Fr. Dietzen's responses are enlightening and succint. He is polite and honest, good qualities in a priest. Some may say the book is soft but what's wrong with that? It is a gentle approach and refreshing as opposed to the in-your-face communication that is now rampant in the world.I love this book and if another one comes out, I'll surely buy it. It's like having your parish priest right beside you.
One reviewer stated this book is an "...excellent gift for a new Catholic, or someone you know in an RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) class, who is preparing for baptism, confirmation or who is returning to the Church after a long absence." If this poor excuse of a book had been given to me and my wife last year at the beginning of RCIA, I guarantee we would NOT have followed through on our commitment and return to the Church.This book was recently recommended (to me) via email by "The Catholic Company" (online retailer of Catholic goods). Personally, I will no longer do business with any vendor who sells such nonsense; I suggest you do the same if businesses you frequent online recommend books like this.Liberal and "soft" leanings like those expressed in this book are a dime a dozen these days and are easily revealed as inherently self-serving and bloated with error. Anyone who buys into this tripe blindly sells themselves short and does their faith no good by following the blind who author such trash. I'd rate this as deserving no "stars" if possible but even Amazon.com won't let you slam-dunk garbage when you see it.
I bought this book because I needed another $7 to qualify an order for free shipping at Amazon. A fan of Catholic Q&A books but unfamiliar with the author, I thought it was worth the risk.Amazon soon will receive my request for a refund. This book is 500 pages of unenthusiastic, incomplete, often erroneous explanations of the Catholic faith.For starters, Dietzen frequently begins sentences with 'Catholics believe' or 'the Church teaches', especially when he is presenting a truth of the faith deemed controversial. This is the sort of language that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops discourages from being used in catechetical texts because it suggests that the truths taught by the Church are merely a set of options.When one questioner asks whether homosexuals can knowingly be ordained priests, Dietzen proceeds to lecture the questioner about his insensitive attitude and then glibly claims that 'a bishop may ordain the individual, whatever his sexual orientation.' He neglects to inform the questioner that Pope John XXIII strongly discouraged this practice in 1961 and Pope John Paul II reaffirmed that teaching over thirty years later.Similarly, when asked a question about whether the Catholic Church is 'the one, true church', he explains that the Holy Spirit works in other religions. No, Fr. Dietzen, the Holy Spirit may work in individual nonchristians, but it has never been held that the Spirit works indiscriminately via, say, Islam and Hinduism.One questioner asks why the Baltimore Catechism is no longer used to instruct children in the Faith, and Fr. Dietzen states that the Church has moved away from this method in favor of a 'living liturgy' and Biblically-based catechesis.In fact, each chapter of the most popular version of the Baltimore Catechism begins with a reading from Scripture and includes recommendations for further Bible reading. The catechism features many chapters on the liturgy and, most importantly, the Eucharist, the centerpiece of the Mass. It is only when we moved away from structured catechisms in the 1970s that our current widespread biblical illiteracy began.Lay apostolates - groups enthusiastically encouraged by the Second Vatican Council and whose explosive growth is a direct result of the abysmal quality of parish-based catechesis - are dismissed as potentially 'elitist' and dangerous.It isn't surprising that this book lacks an imprimatur, an imprint that guarantees a publication is error-free. With so many good works of catechetics and apologetics available, there simply is no reason to read this 'lite'-weight, error-prone book.Catholics wanting authentic explanations of the Faith should look for the imprimatur and seek books by faithful publishers, e.g., Our Sunday Visitor, Ignatius, Ascension Press, or Servant Publications.
