"Scarlet Passion: Ferrari's Famed Sports Prototypes and Competition Sports Cars 1962-73" by Anthony Pritchard was a book I thought I'd be hanging a five star review on, but was very surprised to have not been as satisfied with it as I presumed I would be.The author is a notable name in the realm of vintage sports and racing car book writing, but I was surprised to find the way that he at times lost his objectiveness to the history being recounted. At one point he comments on the Daytona 24 Hours race as being "boring", makes the North American Racing Team (NART) look like a bunch of bumbling idiots, and at several occasions is highly critical of Ford Motor Company/Shelby American. While I realize that not all is rosy in the annals of history, the author's words in this tome, at times, can give one an altered perception regarding the history at hand.The overall layout of the book is nice, with many photographs in color and black and white. Chapters 3-8 focus on a race season recap of the prototype category year by year dating from 1962 to 1967. Sub-headings within each of these chapters focus on highlights from each of the races covered, and this includes coverage of the European Hill Climb Championship, which was great to read about.Chapters 9-13 focus on the cars themselves, ranging from the 250LM and Can Am cars through to the 312PB. There are more race recaps here as well. Each chapter begins with a few paragraphs outlining the design of the car being discussed, but nothing of a highly technical nature so to speak.The author tends to hi-light certain customer teams more than others, and I was a bit taken back by how he wrote about the 1971 Le Mans race, in which Posey and Adamowicz took 3rd place in their NART 512M, the highest position captured by a Ferrari since Parkes and Scarfiotti took their P4 to second in the 1967 running of the French classic.Four chapters at the end of the book dedicate themselves to interviews conducted by the author of Mauro Forghieri, John Surtees, Brian Redman, and Colonel Ronnie Hoare. The piece on Forghieri was exceptional as it was great to get heavier technical insight into what went into designing and running the cars of this period.Overall this is not a bad book, especially when you take into consideration the many great photos that are included. There is also an appendix of chassis numbers and descriptions of each chassis and how it evolved at the end of the book which is of considerable interest. A 3.5 star review would perhaps be more appropriate, as it is still a good resource despite some of the issues that I noted above.
For fans of a certain vintage, no period of Ferrari's sports car competition history has more fascination than the 60s and 70s, when the transition was made to mid-engined cars and Ferrari faced stout competition from Porsche and Ford. Anthony Pritchard's Scarlet Passion covers the period from 1962 through 1973 and delivers a deserved documentation of the glory cars in their glory years. Ferrari fans will find much here: all significant grand touring and prototype cars, including the 250 LM, the Can-Am cars, the 312P prototypes, the 512S and 512M cars which competed with the legendary Porsche 917, and the 312 PB. Sections on personalities, specifications, championship race results, and detailed histories for specific chassis numbers provide the detail required. The book is also lavishly illustrated with wonderful pictures of each type. Not to be missed.
