I did one USN deployment off the coast of Vietnam and 2 tours in country mostly 'brown water' 1969-1972. I was the Nha Be Harbor Master's Interpreter late 1971 to early 1972. I am retired and live in Vietnam with my wife and 'war buddy.' of 46 yearsPO. Kirshen has vastly more combat experience than I do. Most of my experience was supporting the US, Vietnamese and Cambodian Navies. Kirsten is careful to provide evidence of his experiences that is quite convincing. Sailors can sometimes wind up in rather strange situations and having proof is sometimes important. Kirshen's contrasting the wartime Vietnam to today's Vietnam is well done and effective.While most Americans have mostly forgotten Vietnam, it looks like Vietnam will again become important to America and Americans. Thankfully Vietnam today is very American friendly
The cover and headline are completely misleading. While the LCM’s were instrumental in the prosecution of the Viet Cong they were manned by a cockswain and others. Cockswains were Not boat captains. Boat captians were senior NCO’s.The book covers more of the authors meals on his return vacation to Viet Nam than “in-country†information. For anyone interested in the Brown water Navies gun boats this is NOT the source to purchase.

I'm pretty sure the author was on the rivers, I'm equally sure he was not a PBR Boat Capt...Which begs the question. Why use a Mk. I PBR as a cover photo????

Great read! Love the two different perspectives. A must read for ALL Vietnam vets.
Very entertaining. It brought back a load of memories and many laughs.
I was interested in this read at first. Then I looked at the glimpse and saw that the images on the cover aren't true. This author captained an LCM-6 landing craft, not a PBR. If folks can't get the cover correct, then I'm not all that interested in discovering what other mistakes are included.
