Linda L. Putnam is a Research Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her current research interests include discourse analysis in organizations, negotiation and organizational conflict, and gender. She is the co-editor of twelve books, including The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Communication (2014), Building Theories of Organization: The Constitutive Role of Communication (2009) and the author/co-author of over 180 journal articles and book chapters. Glad to have my copy in hand. A must-read for people who want to know the foundations of academic research on organizational communication.

Overall, I think this new version of the handbook is very well thought out. I do have a few problems with some of the directions the content took. As I am an Org Comm social scientist, I'm amazed at how much of the book is now specifically geared towards interpretive and critical understandings of organizational communication. The most recent analysis of the research in Org Comm still demonstrated that quantitative research accounted for more than 50% of the content published within the field. However, this book is clearly not representative of the actual state of Org Comm today. Personally, I think the editor's skewed the book (probably unconsciously) in a single direction that isn't truly representative of the field today.

Who is this book for? Scholars who have been in this field for years, I think. Yet, this book is used in my graduate introductory to org comm course and it could not be a more painful experience. The field as a whole is pretty painful, actually, but I'll restrict my comments to this book. As a phd student in rhetoric and professional communication, I have been continuously baffled by the inchoate jargon each chapter's author brings to their subject matter. Sometimes the language is so dense that I spot typos the editors didn't catch after four editions (a petulant example that I have on hand is that Schumate and Contractor confuse the words “mode” and “node” because they refused to simply say “actor” or “agent,” which are clearly interdisciplinary synonyms, thus forcing the typo “Affiliation networks are two-mode networks” when they meant two-node, p. 452). In a chapter on structuration theory, the author even admits that one method is so confusing that he can't even describe it. Excellent—a useful handbook, indeed. Now, I know the counterarguments to this critique: learn the field, understand the discourse, and you'll "get it"—translation, I'm just ignorant and nubile. Understood. But I am neither ignorant nor nubile in my education about the tangential fields that inform org comm, such as linguistics, rhetoric, business, philosophy, psychology, and more; I am primed to graft org comm theory onto my bases of knowledge. The authors, though, make no attempt to translate their terminology to educated but content-ignorant readers: e.g., early chapters use terms that are elucidated by later chapters, but the later chapters are elucidated by terms in the earlier chapters, and so on. My argument is that this book is only meant for people who already know the field, but then, why would you need this book if you already know the field?Finally, the amount of scholastic incest is incredible: most chapters are gloriously self-indulgent and I now play a game of counting up how many self-citations each author fits into a single bibliography. Some authors even cite earlier editions of their work in this handbook... Again, like the counterarguments academics have prepared for not understanding discourse-specific jargon, I know why authors cite themselves from time to time. But, why 22 times in a single chapter, chapter after chapter? My point is that the gratuity of the self-citations reflects on the "constitutive construction" of this field's identity as unapologetically insular and abstruse.This field isn't rocket science. It's communication theory. We critique scientists and engineers for not making their work accessible, yet do the same thing ourselves. The irony of a field dedicated to communication not being able to communicate their ideas should not be lost on the authors, and, as I'm sure there will be a needless 5th edition of this book, I hope that the authors can do the necessary work of translating their ideas to a broader audience of academics who want to use their concepts in practice.
