One of the best books I have read on Philippine history. It is written from the perspective of Basque settlers and pioneers that emigrated to the Philippines. My wife is from the Philippines and this book was helpful in understanding the Basque and Spanish colonizers and their contributions to Philippine culture and societal development. I believe my wife has some Iberian branches in her family tree, this book helps to visualize possible topics for research. Well worth the money!
it is very enlightening to read this book, being from the philippines, i just hear these name with sonorous sounds, arlegui, amunategui, ynchausti (some of my personal friends have names like these)but i didnt bother to investigate, as just knew their ancestors were from spain and considering that the philippines was colonized by spain for 300 years, to me, these names were just part of the landscape. the book is very educational and informative..good book.
Excellent and well researched on the early life of the Spanish in the Philippines. Gives good background on the well known names we recognised in our everyday life. Must read for all those interested in the early history of the Philippines.
Generally a boring book and only focused on well-known families that you can Google. It was more of a narration than an interesting study/research
