This was a great introduction to a historical event I knew little about. The characters are well-formed and believable. The scenes are descriptive and highly visual. I will be looking for more information on this campaign.
Great story
Fascinating story about Ancient Greece and one man's desire to end the evil tyranny that existed during that time. The author did a fantastic job with the characters and historic details throughout the novel making this a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend picking this one up!!
Excellent book about the price one must pay and lengths one must go to for freedom to prevail in the face of tyrants and bullies. The tyrant in question in this book is Antigonus. He makes for a compelling threat after he defeated and embarrassed Spartans in battle on land at Corinth, and the Egyptians and Athenians at sea around Cos. The books protagonist Aratus, describes the Macedonian King's victories as being large enough that they literally paralyzed the Achaean League’s Council eighteen years. This led to the difficulties Aratus would have at convincing the Councilmen, and compelling the league to seize an opportunity at Corinth. The book is set in an exciting time in Central Greece when the Peloponnese were dominated by the Macedonian Kingdom of Antigonus II and examines through historical fiction, the ways in which Aratus confronted the challenge of Macedonian tyranny as Strategos of the Achaean League.The author also does an excellent job in portraying a man trying to enact his vision for military victory and spreading freedom on the Peloponnese. Aratus looks beyond the immediate need for security and smaller league interests of his allies, through plans to strike at a major city in Antigonus’ empire. The weight of the Strategos is heavy, and the author does an excellent job portraying the efforts and risk Aratus takes to enact his vision. Without giving anything away, I will say that the author excels at developing his characters, building the suspense, and describing the settings, ESPECIALLY the battles. I would compare the style to one of my other favorite books Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Both do a remarkable job at making you feel the emotions and strain of the combatants, and the harsh nature of war. I read the last 1/3 of this book straight through without stopping, even though it was way past my bedtime, j/k.My favorite quote from the book: “A chance to be remembered for all eternity, and in that, a chance at immortality! Isn’t that all any brave man could ask for in his life?†Check this out and enjoy!- I received this as an ARC.
I love reading historical fiction about events that I didn't learn much about in school but that are nevertheless important. Well written and incredibly readable from start to finish, Fortress of the Sun delivers a story of war and friendship that anyone with a passion for Ancient Greece should have on their bookshelf or Kindle.I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

If you like stodgy historical detail, you will be thrilled by the first third of Fortress of the Sun.Fortunately for those of us who find stodgy, historical detail heavy plowing, the pace picks up about halfway through and zips along for the final third.
